New Haven Celebrates the Re-launch of its Innovation Space: MakeHaven

(6/10/2013) MakeHaven, a vital spoke of New Haven’s Innovation Hub, is hosting a “cutting edge” re-launch ceremony on June 10th at 4:30pm. The event will include a tour of the space, a showcase of works already in progress and recognition for the sponsors who were instrumental in getting this collaborative space up and running. Remarks will be made by Mayor DeStefano, along with Economic Development Administrator Kelly Murphy, MakeHaven President Marcus O. Notz, Nichole Jefferson, the Executive Director of the City’s Commission on Equal Opportunities and Marna Wilber ASSA ABLOY, Director of Corporate Communications and Public Relations.

The City’s Economic Development Department contributed $16,000 for materials and $3,500 for trainee stipends. The Commission on Equal Opportunities (CEO) renovated the space providing nearly $65,000 of free labor through the Construction Workforce Initiative 2(CWI2) program. CWI outreaches to New Haven residents, women and minorities in an effort to provide employability, life skills, green construction certificates and hands on pre-apprenticeship training in the building trades. Classes are open twice a year. This specific initiative involved a 7-week work green pre-apprentice trade training program for 5 construction trades – electrical, plumbing, taping/painting, carpentry and mason/bricklayers trained 6 students.

“The relaunched MakeHaven is the latest addition to New Haven’s rapidly growing innovation ecosystem ---the successful and wide-ranging effort to grow and diversify the city’s economy through projects such as Project Storefronts, The Gateway Food Incubator and The Grid, New Haven’s innovation hub,” said Mayor John DeStefano.
